Second Sleep

There is no anxiety in my waking
a moment so steady and at peace
the calmness quiets so delicately
over and through my mind a deep breath

This hour is uncounted by most aside the night shift
it comes to me as soaring colored emotion gusting
the deepness of the dark hides that which might deceive
my eyes useless, I'm staring only at my mind movie paint

The first sleep is gone from me and with it the twisting fits
A profound inhalation captures those thoughts
The exhalation doesn't come easily, but it must turn
and into it go the deep-seated and the soul passengers

Wakeful departure turning tracks with unexpected switches
A train ticket missing destination brings my fearful heart
Staring through windows, accelerating landscape passes with haste
At the station, the second sleep has taken me

Hear Me

It is me that I want to see tomorrow morning
nobody else will do

I can't even look anymore to see if I am there
in here I know that it is me

Out there I won't go look for you
smiling alone I've gone

A nearby clock is too far past
it's time to run, it's time to see me through

I've dreams colored music coming over me now
they are everything, the only thing

That rhythm is so criminal, it is so needed
what I want is so easily overtaken by it

It remains the only thing so blaringly real
how could I not realize it's me calling me now

We all dream staring into a mirror waiting for ourselves
broken children playing asleep

it has been too long since we've kept our eyes open long enough
sleeping souls can't wake up fast enough

I hear it and want it to be every word I say
every word I say

Only When the Music Plays

I was going crazy
until the music started playing
with my mind

Paint dream crosses
roll by car windows stuck
in the down position

Random weather falling
coats worn upon wide fields
from days when I was lost

Never cold breath
opens over the winter lake
like ships frozen and adrift

The crime to stare
to see you standing there
to need to want

Deep is the sky
full of a hundred black birds
I stare with envy

I've gone there finally
with the music playing
in my mind
