The Onion Snow

Last night, as I watched it snow,
the flakes were as large as
sliced onion, my childhood eyes
open wide with a smile

They tumbled over each other
so light, it was a wonder to me
how they could fall at all.

My dad explained to me when I was young,
so bright eyed with the fresh morning snow
he told me that Winter has chosen to say farewell
and spring will come to us in days.

My heart plunged thinking of my snow fading
So many nights racing on sleds until dark hours,
hours when my mother had me get ready for bed

That morning, that last day of Winter
I ran out one more time to play
to dance around in Winter's wonder
to dance before Spring's warm sunshine came
and took it away

In the weeks that followed I would still run outside
I would still stay out longer than I should
Winter all but forgotten, innocently spinning away

Today I'll step outside smiling
lost in my childhood memories
warm in all seasons grace
